My ankle is exciting

So yesterday I got the cast off and got one of those aircast boot things. Getting the cast off tickled like hell. I also got the stapes out of my incisions from surgery. Still can’t put weight on it for another 4 weeks, but now I can take the boot off and wiggle my ankle around, which is kind of painful but good, and I can shower without wrapping an entire extremity in trash bags and duct tape.

Now I look like a GoBot.

I took pictures of the incisions because I like that sort of thing, but I didn’t post them on Flickr because someone will be grossed out. I was really tempted, but I resisted.

Hopefully I’ll get back to the office a bit soon, but work is otherwise moving along quite fast; I’ve got two mini sites coming out soon from my job at the Life Sciences Institute, and I’m working on rehauling the site for a really cool local business. And the usual odds and ends.

I would like to give props to Natalie Dee for coming through like a champ when her server went down. She’s been posting her daily comics on YouTube, along with some other very funny clips. She is awesome.

I would also like to draw your attention to a few new links in the sidebar: Jeweled Platypus is the blog of a fellow platypus in California. She also likes webby stuff and diagrams and such. And Legends of the Internet is a video variety show that grew out of the wonderful stuff happening at the ORG, which grew out of the wonderful stuff done by Ze Frank during his recently ended one-year show.

i have excellent photographic documentation of my badly-stubbed toe from a year ago! i later realized that i could only look at the pictures and like them because i knew it didn’t hurt as much as it looked (things never do).

I want a hamburger

My mom is visiting to help out, and cooking, and cleaning, or organizing things against my will.

I’m being quite productive, actually: can’t go anywhere yet, but I’ve been working from home on some projects for the county and my other gigs. Even did some website tweaking (results forthcoming).

Mostly, though, I would like to report that I would really like a medium-rare burger from Casey’s with grilled mushroom, cheddar cheese, and guacamole. And fries, of course.

Thank you.

Home again

Yesterday morning I had surgery to repair my broken ankle. I arrived at the UM Hospital around twenty to 6 yesterday morning, went to the OR around 7:30, and stayed overnight last night. Three square meals, a lot of painkillers, and a brand spanking new cast later, I’m home.

be better!

My first video ever (Photoshop and iMovie), made for “the sportsracer show” episode of The Show with Ze Frank. Thanks to the ‘racers, and Ze.

Original pre-move comment from Brian:
This was one of the coolest microwhatevers in the sportsracer show. well played.

Waiting

While I wait for surgery (i.e., eventual mobility) on March 12, I’ve been catching up on things like celebrity rag blogs (idontlikeyouinthatway.com), eating Cheerios from the box, Flickr, and reading (Gödel, Escher, Bach, the first issue of SteamPunk Magazine, and the back of the Cheerios box).

I’m also basically detoxing. Very little coffee (I gave up on the idea of no coffee because I’m a wimp), no booze, and lots of sleep. At first the pain pills were knocking me out, but I’m just taking the bare minimum so that my ankle doesn’t get too umcomfortable. Hurt a lot this morning because I overdid it yesterday: it’s unfortunate when basic activities that require being upright for more than 5 minutes (cooking dinner and showering) are overdoing it. My mom will be arriving Sunday evening, so it’s doubtful that I’ll be allowed to be quite that active again for a few days.

I had better get an awesome copy of the post-op x-ray, is all I can say.

Original pre-move comment from Erin:
Say hi to your mom for me! I hope you feel better soon… Maybe I should tell work that I can’t come in and have to go nurse my sick friend back to health. Ann Arbor! Woohoo! No, really – I hope you heal fast. :)

Your Life Work: The Librarian

Oops.

So, I was on my way to bed on Saturday night/Sunday morning when I tripped and fell. This is not a rare occurrence for me. I do not possess a great deal of grace.

However, this time I hurt my right ankle. I spent most of the day on Sunday convinced that I had a bad sprain. When it got weird and wobbly, I thought perhaps a trip to the ER was in order. Good thing, because I found out I broke my ankle in three places.

Now I am rapidly running out of pajama pants that fit over the splint I get to wear until I have surgery on Monday, I suck at crutches (my first pair), and I’m contemplating getting a microwave so that I can eat food that doesn’t come in a cereal box without possibly setting myself on fire.

But, things could be much worse: I broke my ankle in about the best way possible, and it doesn’t hurt much, although that might be the Vicodin talking. Mostly, I just want to get it fixed, screws and plates and all.

Needless to say, my recent plans for world domination, renewing my driver’s license, and meeting with clients to build a new website will have to be postponed for a bit. My boss at the county takes this as a sign that I should slow down. I take it as a sign that I need to stop walking into unlit rooms, but perhaps that boils down to the same thing.

Update: My ankle and I chilling at home:

The splint at home.

Rob Zombie, and being one of Those People

toothpastefordinner.com

I love Rob Zombie. I love his movies, I love his music (especially White Zombie; can you believe that Astro-Creep: 2000 came out over 11 years ago?*). He is a hoot. I think I love Rob Zombie becuase I love old horror movies, I love 1970s Westerns like The Wild Bunch (which was clearly a source of inspiration for The Devil’s Rejects), and he makes excellent use of pop culture in all his media. Meta-pop culture is about the best thing ever.

And it is my off-the-cuff use of the prefix “meta” which is what I planned to write when I got up this morning: I am one of Those People. I am one of those twenty-somethings with a master’s degree and expensive hobbies. I drink microbrewed beer. I laugh riotously at Cat and Girl. I wear t-shirts over button-up shirts. I eat a lot of kale.

The final straw came last night as I was in bed reading John Hodgman’s hilarious The Areas of Expertise (from the library) and I looked over at the mounting stack of books and magazines on the floor at my bedside. And they were:

  • three issues of The Believer
  • a 1952 hardback edition of Look Homeward, Angel with the original (wrapped) dustjacket
  • George Herbert’s Dune
  • The Singularity Is Near
  • two volumes of illustrated Shel Silverstein poetry
  • a large-format book about vanishing Americana, like automats and leisure jackets (from the library)

Hello. My name is Devon. And I am a bit of a hipster.

*Even more terrifying: Today I discovered that Alien3 came out 15 years ago. Alien itself came out about 28 years ago. What?

Original pre-move comment from mattbot:
You should move to Brooklyn! They set aside a whole section of the country for people like us who use “meta” in casual conversation.
